Abkhaz President Sergei Bagapsh Dies At 62
Sergei Bagapsh, president of the breakaway Georgian region of Abkhazia, has died aged 62, the Abkhaz authorities say.
They say he died in a Moscow hospital from complications after recent lung surgery procedure.
Since its brief war with Georgia in 2008 on another disputed territory, South Ossetia, Russia has obtained Abkhazia.
Mr Bagapsh has won his second five-year term in 2009. Georgia denounced the elections as “illegitimate.”
Abkhazian officials say Vice President Alexander Ankvab be interim leader.
Russia sent forces to the separatist regions in a brief war in August 2008.
Abkhazia declared independence from Georgia in 1992, but there is only recognized by Moscow as well as a handful of other countries.
In 2008, Western countries have condemned Russia penetrates deep into Georgia, in addition to areas of conflict.
Thousands of ethnic Georgians fled the region in the course work conflict and lots of people remain displaced in Georgia.
Russia, then pulled back its troops to the regions.
In September 2009, a document sponsored by the European Union that both sides had violated international law. He noted that Georgia had attacked the Russian-backed rebels in South Ossetia, the outbreak of the war, after months of provocation.
